Michael Jackson’s estate, as we’ve said before, will be a nightmare to probate. Might you be interested in getting a seat on the sidelines where you can see the gory events unfold instead of just reading what the media summarizes? The Los Angeles probate court handling Jackson’s estate is online. Here’s how to open the door so you can claim your seat.
First, go here to see the entry page for the court’s probate section. You’ll see this page…

Notice in particular the links on the left for Probate Notes and for Case Summary. These are where you’ll get information on Michael Jackson’s estate. When you click on these, you’ll be asked to type in the case number. It is BP117321.
Case Summary gives you this information:
- General information (Case number, Filing date, Case type and Status)
- Future hearings that are scheduled
- Parties
- Documents filed in the case
- Proceedings held
For example, here is the list of documents filed as of July 4, 2009.
Can you imagine what this list is going to be like by the time this probate is over some years from now?
Probate Notes are just that – notes that show the status of the case and summarize what the parties have been doing. To understand these you will probably need to look at the list of abbreviations the court provides. Here are the notes relating to the Petition for Special Letters of Administration filed on July 2 by two of the three executors named in Jackson’s will.

Don’t feel like a voyeur. The court is, after all, a public forum. And that is, by the way, one of the reasons that some people work very hard to keep their estate out of the probate court.
Unfortunately, you can’t get PDFs of the actual documents. But we’ll be providing them as we get them from other sources.
